Breaking a Habit

I did something yesterday.   Something that I hadn't done in a year and a half.  It felt strange at first.  I didn't really know how to act.   I didn't know if I should be happy or if I should feel like I was abandoning the past.  And it was hard to know exactly where to go.   Please don't judge me - - -

I listen to the radio at work.   Since I'm in the basement, I can listen to whatever I want, and as loud as I want.   For the last year and a half I've been listening to talk radio.   I know -  -why?   I was addicted.  I liked it.   It informed me.   It made me think.   But yesterday I decided I didn't want to think anymore.  I didn't want any more information.   All I wanted was to dance in my head all day long.  I wanted music.   I wanted to escape in its magic.

So, I flipped the AM dial to FM.   I turned the "tune" dial, trying to find just the right station.   Some were too fuzzy, some were too rappy, some were too country and some were too Spanish.   Nothing against country or Spanish music (something against fuzzy and rappy), but since I was giving up my year and a half long habit, I needed to find just the right thing to replace it.

Then I heard it - - John Mayer.   And then Maroon 5.   Bruno Mars came next.   I found it.   Not the perfect station, but it will do.   I'm still waiting to hear Stevie Nicks or Mumford & Sons.   But still . . . a bit of basement heaven.

  2. I am unfamiliar with that music but it sounds like soft rock, perhaps? I really loved JACK-FM out of Seattle...out here it's called FRANK-FM. They play a nice mix. I'm kinda stuck in the 'classic rock' era so all my radio stations are tuned to those! So you don't find the music distracting when you work? I've always needed it quiet.

    1. It's kind of weird - - I find the quiet distracting! I love classic rock but couldn't find a station down here in my basement :(

  3. On your computer, go to Grooveshark.com or Pandora.com and put in the type of music or artist you like and listen to their choice or yours of music all day. I shrink down the page so I can type blogs while I listen.

    1. I've thought of that . . . but I have earphones in a good portion of the day, so it wouldn't really work! Poo!

    2. Yes, Pandora is great for this! I have it on my computer, my ipad and my iphone -- I can listen to my kind of music at any time - with headphones on the iphone, with our w/o headphones on the ipad and computer :)

  4. Oh, I heart Mumford and Sons! Personally, at work I'm a huge Pandora fan :-) But I have my own office so I don't have to worry about noise :-)

    1. I have my own office, too. The difference is, though - - that you'd be the one dictating, and I'd be the one transcribing :)

  5. Finding the "just right" radio station is not easy but soooo worth it. There are a lot of stations streaming online now that you might not be able to pick up on a regular radio.

One other radio-related note: I was extremely distressed last year when I realized that my town's "oldies" station was now playing the songs I listened to in high school. What the heck is that supposed to mean?! ;)

  6. I do a lot of channel surfing in the car. I don't listen to the radio at home. It's hard to find the right thing to fit my mood sometimes. I wonder if you tried some kind of antenna thingy if you'd get better reception and more choices. Sounds like you have a pretty good one already. Rock on sister.

  11. How cool to be able to listen to whatever you want to at work! (instead of listening to doctors who speak English as a second language or talk with their mouths full of food or talk a mile a minute.......oops just thinking what I get to listen to at work :)

I do remember my mom always having the radio on when we were growing up listening to music and she listened to the music of the day which was kind of neat, I think :)

    have a great weekend!

  12. I am hopelessly enamored with contemporary pop. It's kind of embarrassing, because no one else in my immediate circle can stand it. That's why God invented headphones. (Love to see "Minute by Minute" back on the agenda...)
