Fry Me A River

I apologize to my arteries for what I'm about to say.

There there is nothing better than . . . fried foods.  There, I've said it.  My arteries, however, will be pleased to know that The British Medical Journal did a study, published in January of this year, which showed that fried foods are not bad for you if they are fried in olive or sunflower oil.   Ha!  I stopped reading after that because I didn't want to see if a "but" followed.   Yes, I know.   The study didn't say that fried foods were healthy (or DID it?  I didn't finish reading!) -  just that they weren't "bad" for you.   "Healthy," "not bad," - semantics.  All the same to me.  So, fried foods - thumbs up!!  Straight from our friends across the pond.  I love those Brits!

And where better to get fried foods than at a fair!   Fairs are really kind of creepy (mainly because of the really scary people who work there).  But fair food is totally amazing!    The unofficial motto of state fair food vendors is that if you can fry it, you can eat it.    Fried bacon, fried oreos, fried coca cola, fried kool-aid, fried pop tarts, fried Twinkies, fried club salad.  You name it, you fry it.   The 2011 Wisconsin State Fair even offered clumps of deep fried butter.  That sounds extremely gross to me, but who am I to judge?

Next month is our annual Balloon Stampede.   Hot air balloons in the sky and rows of vendors on the ground selling their wares, including, of course, fried foods.   We don't have anything as exotic as fried coca cola (although if we did, I'd be first in line), so I will look for the humongous platter of fried french fries (redundant, I know).

What's your favorite fried food?

  1. I do like fried food - but somehow there was just too much of it in this post! Made me a little queasy ;-)

I guess my favourite fries are French Fries - and maybe onion rings.... mmmmm soo good!

  2. French fries all the way! When I was pregnant with our first baby, I was sick all the time. The only thing I ate and kept down: french fries. I've never forgotten their kindness!

  4. Only one favorite? Shoot. I like my chicken wings fried, you can bake them, but fried is so much better. You can't have a "Willie's Fish Sandwich" unless it's deep fried. Most anything is better if it's deep fried. Ah the fair and it's temptations.

  9. Sherry E, me too! I like a lot of fried foods, and really practically any fair food is awesome. I tried a fried candy bar once and it was great - but so rich that it was hard to choke down much of it. I think it was a deep fried snickers or something. I like fried mushrooms and cheese the best. We find morels in the spring here and fry them and my husband just started growing oyster mushrooms which we also fry and they are nearly as good. I don't care for fried shrimp, however. The breading just hides the taste.

  11. I live in Georgia, where EVERYTHING seems to be fair game for the deep fryer. (urp) As if Twinkies and Snickers bard weren't already bad enough for you, hey! Let's throw it into a pot of boiling lard! YAY! No thanks. I'll hold out for an Almond Joy ...

  17. French fries are my only real fried food vulnerability, although there's a Chinese restaurant where I live that makes incredible deep fried spring rolls.

Your post inspired me to Google "deep-fried Coca-Cola" because I did not believe that such a thing existed. Wow. It does. Wow.

  22. When I was in high school, working at Burger King, we routinely entertained ourselves during slow periods by coating and deep frying pretty much anything we could think of--including dill pickles and a wide variety of things from our salad bar. Most of them were pretty fantastic.

We do deep-fried Oreos at home as a special treat a couple of times per year. I'll have to invest in some olive oil or sunflower oil to make them healthy, er, not bad for us.

  23. Fried food and (believe it or not!) doughnuts don't agree with me. Never have. I can handle fried chicken and tempura sometimes, but not much more than that. Fried dough? With the sugar? Which everybody LOVES? - Can't do it! Not even as a child!

BUT... your Balloon Stampede sounds SOOOOOO COOOOOOL!!!!! I would LOVE to see that! Take pictures please!!! :)

  24. What could be better on a Monday morning than reading that someone did a study and found out that fried foods aren't bad? Of course all of the wonderful fried goodies you mentioned are fried in the good oils. ;-)

I've never had frid coca cola, but I think now I will be on a mission to find and try some. Feeding my caffeine and fried addictions at once sounds pretty good.
