I'll Give You A Quarter If you Brush My Hair

I was feeling a little sorry for myself this morning when I got up to get ready to go to work.   You see, the rest of my family has the week off as part of their winter break.  Me?  I am lucky to get Christmas off.    So, my husband and children were all still sleeping soundly - probably having really good dreams - as I trudged out the door, shoulders slumped, ready to keep my fingers poised on the keyboard and my eyes on the clock, waiting for 5 p.m. to come.   To say the least, I was not looking forward to going to work today (okay, THIS WEEK), knowing my husband and children would be at home . . . having fun . . . without me.

And then the lightbulb went on!   I remembered that I had an appointment to get my hair cut this morning!   I love getting my hair cut.   I love to have my hair brushed or played with or even just touched.   Just run your fingers through my hair, over and over and over, and you'll be my friend for life.   I've always been that way.   It relaxes me like nothing else.   I used to pay my brother and my niece to brush my hair (not at the same time).   My mother used to play with my hair . . . I didn't even have to pay her.   And now my husband plays with my hair while we watch TV.   It is heaven.    And he is an angel.

All of a sudden, leaving my family this morning to enjoy life without me didn't seem quite so bad.   Afterall, I got to have my hair played with for an hour before I went into work!   And that makes getting up all worth it!   Maybe I'll get up again in another six weeks!

  2. jeanne - yes! find a hairdresser! I used to cut my own hair, until about a year ago :) Or I'd ask my husband to trim it for me. I always felt a little guilty paying $ to have someone else do it. No more!

  3. Wifely wears her hair long, not quite to her waist. It is a huge source of pride for me, to be the only person on the planet who is allowed to trim it. I began about ten years ago, when she returned from the hairdressers, after being sniveled at by a wannabe, "I wouldn't touch that hair with a ten-foot brush," the implication being that it was not in his realm of what was stylish. No problemo. I am the knight in shining armor, now, riding in on my white horse, to complete a task that takes me ninety seconds, tops. [However, I am willing to tack on hair-brushing, till the cows come in] Hint: We don't have any cows.

  4. If my hair was long and straight, I would definitely let my husband keep on trimming :) I think mostly I pay for the shampoo, which is dreamy :)

  5. Judy, you are braver than I! I would NEVER cut my own hair. I have friends who cut their own hair but I guess I lack so much confidence in the personal grooming world that I couldn't risk it. For at least the last 10 years, I have depended on my now 24 year old daughter to tell me what to wear, how to wear my hair, and all that stuff. Growing up with seven brothers and coming of age when the hippy years came of age combined to make me less than capable in that department.
BTW, as children our mom used to pay us in jujubes to brush her hair at night while she flipped through magazines and watched tv with one eye,

  8. This post gave me the heebie jeebies--I not only don't enjoy having my hair touched (except by Hubby and even then, it has to be under very specific conditions), I am actually phobic about it. Consequently, I have been to a salon perhaps 8 times in my life. My sister used to cut my hair on the rare occasions I would cave and let her. It hasn't been cut or even trimmed at all since 2001. It's thin and fine and not as long as you think hair would be after 11 years. I just wad it up into a bun or ponytail to leave the house.

It desperately needs cut and I can hardly stand it--it makes me crazy to have it touching my face and neck, but haven't yet been able to force myself to remedy the situation because in addition to my odd issue with not wanting anyone touching my hair/head, the small town I live in has very few options salon-wise and the people who work in them are notoriously catty gossips. I am reluctant to give someone money so they can later talk about me behind my back. Lately, I have been exploring my out-of-town options. Wish me luck! ;)

  9. Masked Mom, I definitely wish you luck. We all have those things that give us the "heebie jeebies" - believe me, you are not alone :) (Mine is my feet - - I don't want anyone to look at them or touch them - I hope I never injure them cuz they'd have to put me in order for a doctor to look at them!).

AND, I HATE catty gossipers! Or any kind of gossiper.

  10. I'm a contradiction. I love having my hair touched (it never bothered me when my daughter asked to do my hair, 10 hair clips and a weird pony tail later, we were both happy) but I hate getting my hair cut. I think it's the awkward conversation. I'd like to just sit and not talk!

  11. Michelle, I used to love it when my daughter was younger and would "style" my hair! What a crack up! As for getting my hair cut - I had to totally get over the sitting in front of a mirror thing. I hate that!!! But I just go to my happy place :)

  12. I'm with you , Michelle, on the whole talk to the stylist routine - forget it! PLEASE let me be in silence. And, Judy, right on! HATE the whole look in the mirror stuff -- forget it - you tell me you're done and I will take your word for it and get the heck out of there. And, Masked, Mom, I have that small town thing going on too - and I am known in town so I have to be very careful about what I say. Really???? Can we just not talk?

  13. Amazing that you posted this; our whole family loves to have their hair played with. When Dawnee has a migraine someone in the family massaging hair, or gently pulling on it, tends to relieve the migraine. I don't have the type of hair that inspires people to play with, so I seldom get this treatment; however, it is heavenly when it happens.

  14. Collie, that's usually when I like to have my hair played with - - when I have a bad headache, which I tend to get fairly frequently. And, yes, it is heavenly! (The hair playing, not the headache!)
