Hope Springs Eternal

As I sit here looking out of my office window at the gloom and rain, my first thought is "What great ghost hunting weather!"   Someday I will go on that ghost hunting safari . . . Really.   I will.   I want that experience.    But this weather also makes me want to be home . . . to be in front of the fireplace . . . or in the kitchen baking . . .  or at least eating the baked goods that someone else is baking.   The gloomy skies also make me want to curl up with a good book and shut the rest of the world out as I plunge into the adventure that awaits within its pages.

The weather has such a huge impact on my feelings and psyche.  Probably yours too.  I don't think I could live in Alaska.   Although it is gorgeous (I watch Alaska State Troopers, so I know this to be true) and I would love to visit someday, I would not want to live there.  Where the skies are gloomy and dark most of the time.   Where there's nothing to do but go crazy.  And kill things.   Well, that's probably not true, but I think I would at least get a severe case of cabin fever.   And I think I might doubt that the sun would shine again.   I would much rather live in a place like Washington, which is kind of close to Alaska, but has a big country in between - and I don't think we can see Russia - not even from the Space Needle.   Here in Washington I am certain that the sun will shine again.   And that winter is in its proper place in the cycle of seasons.  Spring will come.   And it will be glorious.  Of that I am sure.  And because of that certainty, I can enjoy the winter, because I know it will only last its allotted time.

Flowers will bloom again.   The gray and gloom of winter will be replaced by vibrant, beautiful colors.   Yes, spring will come again, at its proper time.   And I look forward to that.   Because the blue skies and colors of spring make me want to smile.   Yes, definitely smile.

But, in the meantime, I would really like to be home watching the rain from the comfort of my living room.

  1. It is more fun to be eating the goodies someone else baked and hopefully with a nice mug of hot chocolate to go with. I'm with you all the way on all of this.

  2. I'm always so excited for the Christmas season, but as soon as it's over, I'm ready for spring. And it always takes too long to get here. (The darkness in Alaska would drive me batty!)

  3. I've lived in Alaska, and Arizona, and many points in between, and I still come back to Washington as the perfect place to live! I'm just a PNW girl to the core. Although, the rain is not meshing with my plans to walk to work!

  4. Michelle - umbrella :) I walked to work for almost two years - - rain, snow, (not on the ice) . . .if you don't care what you look like when you get there, then it's kind of fun!

  6. I'd like to be reading a book (as in anything other than textbook) as well. I'm so glad you have hope for Washington, gives me strength to have a little hope for Abbotsford as well. We're close, so I hope sun in Washington, will mean at least faint rays for BC...right?

  7. Larissa, BC is beautiful (at least what I've seen of it). I'm sure you'll have some rays of sunshine sooner or later :)

  8. Speaking of "music for the eyes," you have a symphony going on it that one picture. Darkness: Be GONE.

  9. Really? Washington? Washington is sunny? I thought it was rainy all the time there? You make it sound so lovely. I will say that the one time I spent a few days in Seattle it was summertime and lovely. But, it has a reputation for being cloudy and rainy. My neck of the woods is generally thought of as sunny but it isn't really. We get way too much marine influence - too much fog. But I can travel 30 or 40 minutes to the east and lose it, if I am too depressed by it.

  10. sebtown - yes, believe it or not the sun shines down on Washington occasionally :). We live east of the Cascades, so we get more sun than the coast does. But Seattle does have it's rainless days :)

  11. My two favorite lines from this:

"... or at least eating the baked goods that someone else is baking."

"Where there's nothing to do but go crazy. And kill things."

    Lol!

I'm a rain and "overcast" type of person. Long stretches of rainy, stormy, overcast days would put me in the best of spirits. Snow too :) I'm usually cranky on sunny days!

  12. Okay, east of the Cascades - that I get - some crazy road trip once had the car and me broken down at Moses Lake.... need I say more?

as for rainy stormy days, Noisy Quiet, you must like fog then -- come to NorCal - you can get that life here about 70% of the time.

  13. Love fog :) - As long as there's not a serial killer in it.

  14. Hope is a running theme lately, isn't it? I saw Jewel's post (and actually commented about the thing that would become my post)a week or so ago. I'm sure the gray, rainy wintery feeling has something to do with it. :)
