Too Much Time On Their Hands

Okay, this is just about the stupidest thing I've heard.   Ever.

From a professor at Indiana University - - watching dirty videos (a/k/a porn) may soften the stance of heterosexual men on same sex marriage.   Yes, the more that straight men watch porn the more they warm up to the idea that two people of the same sex could be married.   But, the professor added, it works better with "less educated" men.   Is he trying to say that college educated men are smart enough to figure out that watching porn is just wrong - - no matter what?   Or is he saying that "stupid" men are more apt to watch porn and will believe anything they are told?   As in anything a stupid study tells them?

Let me just say that this post is not about my opinions on same-sex marriage.  It's about my disgust at such an idiotic study and its so-called findings.    And that the professors at Indiana University have way too much time on their hands.   And way too much money at their disposal.

So there.

  1. Aren't people in higher education to learn something useful? Isn't it the responsibility of teachers to provide content of a vocational nature? I agree with you. Our kids go from being taught mediocrity up to 12th grade and then go on to be taught socialism at the college level. Students graduate thinking everything they do is wonderful. They think everything has to be fair - whatever that is. We have a "grading on the curve" mindset and students don't learn to deal with failure because everybody makes the team and gets a ribbon.

    1. Exactly! I agree - - the idea of everying being "fair" is ludicrous. It teaches us nothing, except that we don't have to work as hard as the next guy and we'll STILL get everything he gets.

  2. Well said! It just goes to prove that some academics are basically just a bunch of w- (don't want to say a rude word in your blog, but I'm sure you know what I mean). ;-)

  4. Not only are these studies stupid and worthless, but the conclusions are often the preconcieved opinions of the "expert."

Why is it the watching that results in any effect, and not the personality if the person who would watch effects the result.

Are college educated men less prone to have porn change their beliefs, or are college educated men more likely to give the answers they expect to be politically correct?

Are we paying for these studies with our tax money?

    1. I imagine we're getting hit one way or another financially for these types of "studies." If someone would like to pay me, I'd do a study :)

  5. This guy is a moron and why he is still a professor is beyond me. Doesn't anybody check his work?? We live in a society where everyone pretends to be politically correct and nobody wants to tell the emperor that he doesn't have new clothes, he's butt naked! I am the least politically correct person I know and I have no qualms about telling the emperor he's nekked! This guy should not be allowed to teach the idea of boiling an egg! - Great post Judy..

  6. I think someone wanted to be paid to watch porn and ~ voila ~ they manufactured a study. But even their results are cagey. As you said, SOMEONE needs to look at SOMEONE'S funding. This smells like garbage to me.

  9. There has to be something else to study. Cancer, depression, OCD disorders, why I hate to shave my legs in the winter, why I never see ghosts when I go on ghost tours.......
I think the world has bigger problems than same sex marriage.

    1. Totally agree. Live and let live, and use your time/resources to cure cancer or depression. And I'm with you on the leg shaving thing AND the never seeing ghosts on ghost tours - - so not fair!

  10. Wait, this is actually very helpful to me. See I, personally, am all for same sex marriage. (I know you're not. No prob ;) ) But if this study is true, then it seems all I need to do to get same sex marriage legalized in the US, is send a bunch of porn to our nation's lawmakers!

    I COULD DO THAT!

So, I need specifics! Is it only GAY porn that will sway them? Because you just said "porn." (scrolling up to check.... yup! Just "porn" ;) ) So would any porn do? Because I think it'd be easier to get straight men to watch hetero porn, so if that's just as effective in swaying their beliefs, I'll send that. And maybe I'll toss in some drugs to stupid-ify them first.

As for the women, what do I send them? Or did their study find that women aren't MORONS?

(btw, "hi!!!" just passing through! miss me? ;) )
