My first thought when I saw loss . . . I'm losing my mind! Yes, that was my first thought and I had to grab it before it fell out the hole in my head. But the second thought was something different. So, I let go of the first thought, and it slipped through the crack in what is now known as the hole in my head. Adios, thought! I don't need you now anyway!
A year ago we bought a new car. Finally. We had been driving a couple of really pathetic looking old cars for so long. However, they both were beginning to lose their drive to live. We knew we'd be suffering from the loss of those two cars soon and then what would we do?? Public transportation?! Nah!
So, we bought a car. We traded in one of our old cars for $200 - - I was surprised we got that much. And the other car we sold (full disclosure, honest) to someone who needed "something just like it".
Anyway, the whole point of this story is that we finally got a nice car with one of those keys where you can just push a button and the doors lock, or unlock, or the trunk goes up, or your dinner is served, or your clothes are pressed, or the red button which screams for help because you can't do it yourself because someone has their hands around your throat. And, actually, that's not even really the point. The point is this - - after becoming addicted to pushing the buttons on my key, I lose it! Not just the one key. I lose my whole set of keys - - work, home, car. I really only cared about the new key with the pretty shiny buttons, but still it was inconvenient to have to crawl in the window at work and break down the back door at home.
I was able to get a new work key, and a new house key. I even got a new car key. However, it's the spare "valet" key, and not the "Lost In Space" key that I loved so much.
I have been mourning the loss of my key ever since.
So, if by chance you pick up a carton of milk and see this picture on its side, please be on the lookout. I miss my key. Last seen April 16, 2012.
LOL Mine makes toast. ;D I do miss the trunk button that I had for my Saturn but not my current Elantra. My car is reaching the end of her journey and I'm heartbroken. I love that car....we've been through a lot.
ReplyDeletetoast? I'm jealous! We had also been through a lot with our van. We had it for 16 years and put a lot of family time in it!
DeleteJudy !!! You are super uberer AWESOME this is the best post I could ever or actually not imagine!!! I seen the prompt last night and I kept thinking until I seen your wonderful funny post how to use the word loss without it being sad....YOU dear amzing girl did IT!! WOW seriously I love your post on this prompt and yes love you as well ohh by the by I will be looking on those milk cartons for you & your beloved key LOL
ReplyDeleteLove love love your enthusiasm!! And - - if you find my key, let me know :) I should probably put a reward out for it- haha
Deletemy car is just sadly inefficient and lazy compared to your fancy drive. I am lucky if the key opens the doors, and I know it will no longer open the trunk. And I swear I stepped on the gas pedal the other day and the car actually huffed: "oh...you mean, go forward? okay."
ReplyDeleteIf I find your key, I might be tempted to keep it myself, but it's doubtful my car could even understand the button commands, let alone obey them.
Sounds like you bought one of our old cars. We drive cars til they die. I hate car payments, so that was tough for me when we bought the new car. Blech :(
Deletefirst... you are welcome...thanks for pondering along with me..
ReplyDeleteI lost my whole set of keys with all of the cool little things my kids had given me over the years right before I moved.... I never found them!!!
Love your take on loss...
I had a couple little do-hickies on my key chain too that I actually missed more than the keys :(
DeleteThank you for the laugh in the sea of sorrow. Funny I guess I haven't lost enough of my mind yet. I lost my mother's key once and it was an expensive mistake. I found the key when the snow melted.
ReplyDeleteMy husband roto-tilled his cell phone once :).
DeleteI am so sorry you lost your keys. I have been there and done that and it is no fun at all.
ReplyDeleteNo fun for sure!
DeleteAlthough I'm sorry you lost your brand new shiny key with buttons, I really appreciate your sense of humor about it. I would be out of my mind like the world was ending.
ReplyDeleteThat's what spares are for :)
DeleteWhen you have a few days, I'll tell you about losing our car keys. It was an adventure. Make a spare as soon as you can. The new ones are expensive to make, but it will save you lots of hassle if you ever lose the spare and then don't have any key to the car. Trust me on this. Funny story though.
ReplyDeleteSounds like quite a story, Tammy :) Yeah, the new ones ARE expensive! drat!
DeleteI once knew a lady whose car would turn on and start the heater with the press of one of those keychain key thingies.. I've wanted a car like that ever since... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI'll be on the lookout!
I'd like a car that obeys my voice :)
DeleteMy car key has funny buttons too. When I first got it, I kept opening the boot (trunk) every time I pressed what I thought was the immobiliser. Also, the button on the dash that makes the roof go down looks almost exactly the same as the one that opens the boot, which can be embarrassing... :-/
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know if I find your key.
Thanks! And I take it an "immobilizer" is when you lock the doors? Or is it something else?
ReplyDeleteIt turns off when you unlock the doors, but my car is a bit of a fascist so if you don't start the engine within about ten seconds, it won't start and you have to press the immobliser button on the key.
Delete:( I'm on the lookout.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dana!
DeleteMy husband and I got into WWIII over who lost a set of my minivan keys. 6 months (and fifteen arguments later), they turned up in his jogging jacket.
ReplyDeleteMoral of the story? Joe needs to excercise more.
You so make me laugh! But, you also gave me an idea! Maybe my keys are in MY jogging jacket :)
DeleteI have a key with a button that locks and unlocks, nothing like my Mom's that opens doors and helps saves the world, but when I couldn't find my key, I felt lost. Actually use the key to unlock the door? No buttons? What is the world coming to?
ReplyDeleteThis is really pathetic, but when I go to the store, I am hoping nobody is watching me when I unlock the car with my key and pull the button inside the car to unlock the trunk so I can load my groceries!
DeleteYour car serves you dinner and presses your clothes? Where do I get one?
ReplyDeleteWell, now that I don't have the magic key, it doesn't!
DeleteLOL! Sorry for your loss. I'll keep an eye out for your precious key!
ReplyDeleteWith all you dear friends watching for my key, I'm sure to find it soon!!!
DeleteOops, I know how that feels! The automatic lock/un-lock key for my car was lost for a while too, I had to manually lock and un-lock which was not cool. Then almost a year later it was found by this intensive car cleaning company.
ReplyDeleteI hold no hope of ever finding my key again. But I'm glad you found yours! Maybe I should wash my car once in awhile???!
DeleteHave did that before. :/ Hope you find your key soon!
ReplyDeleteI love my handy remote key too, especially the remote starter that lets me cool it down on 107 degree days and heat it up on cold days before I leave the building to head across the parking lot at work. Those magic keys can be replaced at a dealership, they cost a bit though! The worst place I ever misplaced my keys? In the refrigerator while getting out a bottle of water before work one morning! I tore the house apart looking for them, having just had them in my hand minutes earlier, finally the light dawned... and there they were, laying on the cold shelf just where I left them!
ReplyDeleteI loved your post. Funny, because I actually mentioned losing a key in my own post. My husband's brand-spanking-new car has one of those keys. You don't even have to put it in the ignition, you press a button. After driving that thing a couple of times, you know how frustrating it is to have to manually open my trunk? Or put the key in the ignition? Ugh!
