Officer Hero and . . . You

I've talked about this before.    How we can all be heros.    You've probably all read the story of the NYC policeman and the hero he became to a homeless man with no shoes on a cold cold night.

http://todaynews.today.com/_news/2012/11/30/15568550-cop-who-bought-shoes-for-homeless-man-really-didnt-think-about-the-money?lite.

Truly an inspiring story.   But the most wonderful thing about this story is that Officer Hero did this wonderful thing simply from a pure heart, not because he knew he'd become an instant "star."   He didn't stop to think who was watching.   And now fame is his, and his heroic act is known by millions and he has inspired us all.

I think of all of you.   You, who do good deeds everyday, without the lens pointing at you.   You, who are kind and compassionate simply because that's the way you live your life.   You, who are kind without thought of your kindnesses being brought to the attention of the world through Facebook.  You, who understand that we are all in this together.   You, who knows that none is better than the other.   I hope to cross your path everyday of my life.

Thank you, Officer Hero - - you truly are a hero and everyone knows it.  And you inspire us.

Thank you - - yes, YOU! - -  you truly are a hero, even though nobody knows it but the one you help.   You inspire me!

  1. That was a really cool thing he did and I get the impression he's a little uncomfortable with the accolades. He did it b/c it was the right thing to do, not to be all 'look at me! look what I did!'

  4. I was just reading in the scriptures where it says (paraphrasing) that our good deeds done in secret will be rewarded [by God] openly. I've been the recipient of deeds like that many times in my life and am so grateful for those who do them.

    1. I think that is the exact reason why it bothered me so much when I saw a commercial for an awards show - - I can't remember the name - - but it had to do with people doing good deeds. I don't know. It just seems wrong to be getting "awards" for doing things that we probably should all be trying to do anyway.

  5. Judy, you are so right. It is even better to BE people like that. In small town America where I live, there are many such people. That's the kind of world I want to have as my home--one where people truly care about one another.

Thank you for a wonderful post!

    1. You and me both Monti! We live in a smallish town as well and I love it that people know each other and care for one another. I'm far from it, but I really want to BE one of those people :)

  6. Thanks for such a great post, Judy, and for the reminder to do good deeds out of kindness rather than for recognition. I think that's especially important as the holidays approach.

  9. Judy, your beautiful blog post resonated with me deeply. Kindess has been much on my mind lately. I try to fathom why for some this is such a difficult concept... to treat all others we encounter with kindness and compassion. Each tiny act of kindness warms a heart, and that in turn ignites a flame that reaches out to warm another. Thank you so much for your kind words, and for sharing your warm heart with us!
