I get to ponder today. I love it when I ponder. Thursday finally has a purpose. Thanks to Brenda.
In-laws . . . does that make you shudder?? I think of my own in-laws. The first impression . . . my husband flew me up to his parents' house so we could "meet" . . . shudder. His mother met us at the airport. She called me by the wrong name. On purpose. Yes, I'm fairly certain it was on purpose. Shudder.
After 25 years, however, I no longer shudder. Yes, in spite of the name attack at the airport, the shudder shackles were lifted. Fairly quickly. I was blessed with some awesome in-laws. They have been great examples of compassionate living and have been wonderful grandparents to our children.
And, I might add, that my own parents have been pretty terrific in-laws to my husband.
And, I might add again, that I have found that "in-laws" is a term I don't like to use much - - we are all just one big happy family . . .
And I hope that someday my daughters-in-law and future son-in-law will think the same thing.
I didn't have the privilege of knowing my father-in-law, but my mother-in-law is absolutely wonderful! I've been blessed. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you'll be a great mother-in-law someday!
I'm a mother-in-law now, Dana - - just waiting for the "great" part to kick in :)
DeleteI love my in-laws, they are awesome and very supportive!
ReplyDeleteDitto!
DeleteI was lucky with my in-laws. I hope I can be the same.
ReplyDeleteI've been a mother-in-law for a year now, and my other son is getting engaged soon. So, I'm really really hoping I can be as good a MIL as my own :)
DeleteI hope I an be a great mil. I try to be supportive and I know I tell my DIL that I tried my best.
ReplyDeleteI figure if you're trying, then you are successful :)
DeleteWhat makes me shudder is the thought of my guy meeting MY family, his future inlaws. I have always managed to integrate quickly into the families of whoever I was dating. I have no use for conflict so I've never had any kind of contentious relationship w/ my guy's family. I am a little more concerned about fitting in with Russell's family as they are huge and their roots run extremely deep in this area. But I am very fond of his family and hope they feel the same way about me.
ReplyDeleteI bet Russell's family take you in with open arms . . . :) Most of us just want our family members to be happy . . . so you make Russell happy - that should be enough!!
Deletewrong name? Seriously would've made me head for the hills!
ReplyDeleteThanks for pondering with me!
Nah, I wasn't going to let something like that scare me off! haha
DeleteSometimes I worry about this topic ... specifically because my family is so very protective... The last time I brought a boy friend(.. notice the separation there ... boy friend vs. boyfriend,) home.. my uncle and dad all but bore holes through his head with their eyes..and oh the interrogations! It was all quite fun to watch though .. (;
ReplyDeleteWell that's what brothers and dads and uncles do :). I think it's really kind of wonderful, actually - their protective instinct. But don't worry - when you bring home the "right" guy (years from now cuz you're still young!), they will love him!!
DeleteI love happy endings & I am glad it is you Judy having it!!! I was constantly told the story of my husbands 1st wife whom his grandmom would purposely call her by his old girlfriends name, lucky for me by the time we became a couple she had passed away, but I know I would not have warrant that for the mere reason hubs and I knew each other for so long & were friends I knew all those old girlfriends and wouldn't see myself as threaten by it.
ReplyDeleteTruth be known - the name she called me when we first met was his old girlfriend's name! Oh my! I hope I never ever do that - or worse -WANT to do that!
DeleteSo neat to read about people liking their in-laws (or one big happy family). Sadly I didn't like mine (mainly because of things that both seemed to say about members of my family). But it has resolved me on what I want to be in a MIL should I ever get that opportunity (which I'm practicing on with son's girlfriend)
ReplyDeletebetty
sometimes it's just not your fault if your in-laws suck :)
DeleteI am truly blessed to have wonderful in-laws. My sister and I are estranged from our mother, but my mother-in-law is always there for me. So is my father-in-law.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome . . . :)
DeleteI was lucky to have great in-laws.
ReplyDeleteMe too - - after the wrong name thing :)
