Farewell, my beloved friend.
Oh, how I will miss you.
I'm sure you think I'm kidding. I'm not. Twinkies are a part of me - - - literally and figuratively. I grew up with Twinkies. My mother would put them in my school lunch, which I carried to school in a brown paper bag, not a cool Barbie lunch box. The kids with the cool Barbie lunch boxes were quite jealous when I opened my crumpled brown paper bag and pulled out . . . Twinkies. Twinkies - - the great equalizer. For thirty minutes a day, five days a week, I was cool.
I still relish the occasional Twinkie. There is nothing like biting into that spongy cake and tasting that creamy yumptuous filling.
Yes, it's a sad day. Farewell Hostess - - an American icon. Farewell my beloved Twinkies.
R.I.P.
It's amazing and sad. I never thought Hostess would go belly up, EVER! I loved the Ding Dongs and Pat loves the cupcakes. I even have several Christmas gift ideas that rely on Hostess products entirely.
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad. I would love to see your gift ideas!
DeleteI commiserate with you, Judy !!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anni. That means a lot :)
DeleteWhat? Wait what? I don't understand! Twinkies are gone? Why?! I've never been Twinkie's number one fan, but America without Twinkies just seems .... quite odd!
ReplyDeleteAmerica will be without Twinkies, Larissa. Hostess is shutting their doors after 80+ years of deliciousness. Sad.
DeleteI couldn't believe it when I heard Hostess was liquidating. What's happening to America? It just won't be the same without Twinkies!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what's happening, but I kind of like the old America better :(
DeleteThis news makes me very sad. :(
ReplyDeleteMe too, for a few reasons not related to Twinkies :)
DeleteI've never had a twinkie but I can tell they are addictive just by looking at them - making my mouth water :)
ReplyDeleteWell, Anna, it's gonna to be too late soon! But you're right, they are addictive!
DeleteMy dad retired from Hostess. He used to take us into the plant with him, and it smelled so good there. They also made the bread there, too. His hands would always be whatever color they were making the snowballs. I have a hard time believing they will be gone for good. They are too popular.
ReplyDeleteOther companies may buy them, but it won't be the same. What a great childhood you had! haha
DeleteHostess threatens to close their plants every time their employees go on strike. They have been doing that for years. Hostess saying they are going out of business is like Budweiser saying their going out of business. lol
DeleteWell, maybe there will just be a bunch of people making a lot of money selling their Twinkies on eBay . . . and I'll be able to go to the store in a month and buy a box! Would be nice for the 18,000 employees who might be losing their jobs.
DeleteThe employees at the Hostess plant in Peoria are on strike and the Hostess plant is saying it will shut down. I love Twinkies too.
ReplyDelete18,000 jobs.
DeleteI just heard about this on the news @ noon and how very sad. Twinkies have been an icon for me also. :(
ReplyDeleteThey will be missed, for sure.
DeleteOh my gosh...I had the evil cousin to the Twinkie...Zingers, in my lunch! I am more of a Ho Ho girl though!
ReplyDeleteI liked the SnoBalls, too. Life just won't be the same!
DeleteHard to believe they striked themselves right out of a job. And the rest of the country out of an iconic snack. I think the world has gone crazy.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely on its way . . .
DeleteMaybe Obama should bail them out???
ReplyDeleteHe bailed everybody else out, why not?!
DeleteI just don't like the fact that all of Hostess is going out of business. Over 18,500 jobs are being cut in Irving TX. That's horrible. I was never a fan of Twinkies but I did enjoy their other products. I am esp. mourning the loss of Drake's Cakes, which was a New England brand that was bought by Hostess. I grew up w/ Drake's products. :( Better stock up on those Twinkies!
ReplyDeleteI feel for the 18,500 people losing their jobs . . . the timing is never good, but right before the holidays? Kind of sucks.
DeleteI heard that it might happen, but didn't think they would actually close shop!
ReplyDeleteI used to love Twinkies! I guess I better go buy one to savor for one last time.
Hard to believe that they'll actually disappear! Some big company needs to buy the brand or something!
DeleteNo more golden sponginess? No more cream that never came from a cow? It is a sad day indeed!
ReplyDeleteThe no cow cream was especially delectable :)
DeleteThis sounds as bad as would be the demise of a vegemite sandwich. What a tragedy Knights in Shining armour have ridden off into the sunset.
ReplyDeleteI was sad about Hostess too. It's hard to believe!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty confident some other company will be picking up all the Hostess biggies and running with them. They've gotta, right? No Twinkies? No Hostess cupcakes with those little vanilla squiggles on top of the chocolate icing? Unthinkable! That'd be like not having any more M&Ms. Or popcorn.
ReplyDeleteNo M&Ms - that's a horrible thought!!
DeleteI don't think I have ever had a Twinkie??? I know I love those Joe Louis things though. Oh...and those flaky things are the best. I hope they don't stop making those.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the Joe Louis things ??!
DeleteI told my kids the story..they were up in arms! what?! no more twinkles?!!! what is the world coming to?
ReplyDeleteMy 21 yr old son bought three boxes of twinkies tonight - food storage :)
DeleteHi Judy, your post inspired me to write about Twinkies, too, in my "way".

For those of us from Nor-Cal, I am reminded of the infamous "Twinkie Defense," used by Dan White, in the trial for the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone, and Harvey Milk. Those Twinkies... Loved your post!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, the "Twinkie defense"! Gonna have to use the "little Debbie cakes" defense from now on:)
ReplyDeleteIt was a sad day indeed. I know the shelves have been picked clean, but shopping today, I did happen to look and see if any were left (no) just to have one more taste.....
ReplyDeleteI used to work for a heart surgeon years ago; he loved frozen Twinkies. We always had a stash of them around. But in reality I haven't had one in years, but on hearing they would no longer be available, I did want that one last taste....
betty
It was a little more real to me today as we found out my husband's uncle and cousin both lost their job :(
DeleteI only had Twinkies once when I was a kid, a 4th of July party and I made myself sick on them. That didn't stop me from trying them again as an adult, and loving them! My son has a solitary package of zingers in the cupboard. It was the last Hostess item on the shelf, and he and his friends have taken it out and looked at it so often, I'm surprised the cakes are intact. No one has wanted to open it, yet!
