Monsters in Our Closets

When you were young did you think there were monsters under your bed?   Or in your closet?   I remember pulling the covers up over my head, afraid to peek out, scared that a monster would be staring at me with ugly sharp teeth and drooling mouth, ready to eat me or drag me to an unknown hellish place.

Maybe it was those movies that I used to watch - - Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, to name a few.  Maybe it's because I lived in Southern California when the Manson murders happened.   Or maybe it's because I had a really good imagination.

I don't think there are monsters under my bed anymore (although I'm sure I'd find a relic or two if I cleaned out from under my bed).   And I don't think there are monsters in my closet.

Why is it that when we get older the only monsters we are really afraid of are the monsters in our own minds?

  1. When you grow up you realize there are enough real things in life that are frightening and evil...you don't need to make stuff up.

  2. It's weird but I've never been afraid of monsters. I grew up watching that goofy Gossamer on Bugs Bunny and the fuzzy, adorable Bumbles on Rudolph, so I never was afraid of them. I enjoyed my weekly Creature Double Feature movies on TV in the 70s and the only one that truly bummed me out was 'the beast with 5 fingers'. Disembodied hands scared the heck out of me but I never thought they were in my closet or under the bed. Then there was the year my cousin was convinced Bigfoot was living in the woods behind my house so that kinda scared me! lol

  3. I'm just glad that my kids haven't thought about monsters being under their beds or in their closets—yet.

  4. Under my bed for sure. The closet makes me think of the movie Monsters, Inc. :-) I'll have to make sure my kiddo watches that when she's older so she doesn't get scared like I used to be!

    1. I've never seen that movie! Since my children are all grown up, I don't get to see cute movies anymore :(

  5. There are monsters under my bed that scare me, otherwise known as dust bunnies.

  6. I really do have a monster in my bedroom. It sometimes pounces on my feet and nibbles my toes in the middle of the night when it decides it's time for breakfast - usually it just licks my face with it's cat breath though. ;-)

  7. The only monsters in my room are the ones who keep reminding me of all the things I should have done that day and keep me awake! I guess my monster is me... :)

  9. I didn't realize you were interested in the paranormal (just read the post on your husband's experience). I was not afraid of monsters, just murderers and rapists. Still am upon occasion when I wake up suddenly in the night!
I never believed in ghosts until I had my own paranormal experiences with something of a poltergeist about 15 years ago. She was quite the trickster.
Love the look of the blog this month!

    1. Oh Melanie - poltergeists would freak me out more than shadow people! You'll have to tell your story some time - please ?!

  10. I I was always firmly convinced of the protective properties of the bedcovers. As long as I was covered by at least my sheet, ghoulies couldn't touch me.

  11. I still remember a nightmare I had when I was five years old. The "monsters" were animals like giraffes and elephants and lions and tigers and they were miniature and crawling all over my pillow. They terrified me! I remember my mom coming in and having to turn on the light to wake me up enough to show me that they were't there. How easy it was to dispel monsters back then!

    1. That must have been really scary to remember it after all these years - now if only stuffed animals were the only monsters in the world :)

  12. The closet door always had to be shut, and I never stood next to my bed. I always shut the light off, and I would jump before I got to it, so my feet were never close enough to be grabbed.

  13. You can always watch cute movies. You'd be surprised at how many adults go to them without kids in tow. I was always able to realize that imaginary is just imaginary. Like some of your other posters have said, there is enough real bad stuff out there. I'm with you, I'd rather have the closet kind.

  14. The first time I watched Rosemary's Baby was at the old drive in theater. I sat through most covering my eyes. :)

    1. We went to the drive-in a lot . . . but I don't think I ever saw a scary movie there. That's probably a good thing :)

  15. Under the bed, in the closet, in the air. I was not fond of them at all. I have watched - tried to watch one horror film with my husband a long time ago. Silence of the Lambs- We turned it off 15 minutes into the film. We are both pathetic with this stuff. I like to ignore Halloween, except for the pumpkins, well and the candy.
