Tangled Webs
Memories are woven by so many different threads of experience. One of those threads in my tangled web of memories is Jujubes. Yes. The candy. Those hard, sort of chewy little candies that you could get at the movies. Just the thought of them makes my mouth water, my teeth hurt, and the memories swirl around in my head.
When my sisters and I were little, we went to the movies a lot. On Saturdays, my mom and dad would drop us off at the theater, usually the Fox Anaheim. It had a balcony. We never sat in the balcony . . . we knew what happened there. Ick. Mom and dad would pick us up when the movies were over. Yes. You heard right. Movies. As in two. Double feature, baby! The good ol' days. The days when a movie ticket cost fifty cents and you didn't have to take a loan out to buy a popcorn and a drink. Plus, you got to see TWO movies - two GOOD movies - not one good movie and one stupid movie. And cartoons during intermission! Heaven!
Two movies, a popcorn, a drink, cartoons AND jujubes! My candy of choice back then. You could chew/suck on one of those babies and it would last the entire movie! That might be because they stuck to your teeth and were almost impossible to get off, but still . . .
Aaah. Memories and jujubes.

Love this post brings back so many memories of the Saturday Matinees
ReplyDeleteyeah, the matiness that DIDN'T cost $7.50 :(
DeleteI loved JuJuBes! I brought some to work one year around Halloween, and one of my coworkers chipped a tooth... and was in tears.
ReplyDeleteMan, did I feel like crap for sharing. Next time, they are all mine.
:-)
Great post.

Should have told her to suck on them, I guess :)
DeleteAh, the good old days. When I was a kid in Arizona, they had movies every week that you could get in to for a can of food. It didn't matter if the movie had been out before, because there were no VCR's or even cable. (Our mom dropped us off, too. Man, things have changed!)
ReplyDeleteA can of food is the perfect ticket! You get to see a movie and someone else gets to eat!
DeleteAh yes the good old days. Too bad we can't have the best of our world now and the best from back then.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to Beaver days with microwaves :)
DeleteYEP, I sat on the front row for the Saturday Matinee, but I ate the Flickettes- giant chocolate chips. Let's all go back to the day...
ReplyDeleteMary, I totally forgot about those!! In those shiny green or red or blue tubes!!!
Deleteback in the day my friends and I went to double features at either the Zenith or the Ogden .. both within walking distance .. two features - usually horror movies - and cartoons and news reel .. and then because we were so freaked out we ran home!!
ReplyDeleteOh, horror movies were the BEST!!! They weren't bloody or gory or gross like today - - they were just scary!!
DeleteI'm envious...
ReplyDeleteNo need to be envious. . . Lots in your life right now to be so grateful for :)
Deletehey Judy, you could have written about yourself, you had the J right there at hand
ReplyDeletebut I enjoyed your post
my english is ok but by no means perfect..
I was wondering whether you would go for janitor today..; ?
Anni, Jujubes was as close to Judy as I could get and still be a food! And I could really go for a janitor today - - to clean my house!!
DeleteI liked the Dots better b/c they were softer, but my movie candy of choice was usually Snowcaps.
ReplyDeleteI liked snowcaps, too, because they were pretty :)
DeleteWe have jujubes over here in the UK too, only they are called American Hard Gums lol!
ReplyDeleteWe have our own version of jujubes which are smaller but softer and therefore easier on the teeth.
American Hard Gums! haha! I'll have to ask my brother-in-law about them - he's from Hull.
DeleteBingo on the Jujubes - they weren't my favorite but they lasted a LONG time. Your nickel when a long way - but it also would buy a sugar daddy and that was the tastier way to go in my book! Thanks for the memories!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about sugar daddies! Yes, I used to eat them too. And what about the Brown Cows? Is that what they were called - - they were like sugar daddies but covered with chocolate?!
DeleteHa! I'll bet I can top your story... I can remember going to a double feature on Saturdays. Admission for kids was a dime, adults a quarter. Big bag of popcorn for a dime. I didn't get that; I had chocolate covered raisins for a dime. Yeah! We walked to the theatre and saw a double feature western, a serial of Green Lantern or Bob Winslow of the Navy, plus a newsreel telling what was happening in the Second World War. Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were some of the western stars, and music was part of the movies.
ReplyDeleteBest regards to you. Ruby
Ruby, you definitely topped me! I know they they used to show newsreels about the war, but I don't go back quite that far! What fun memories!! Thanks!
DeleteI've never had jujubes. My candy of choice is definitely Twizzlers.
ReplyDeleteI'm a chocolate-covered raisin girl myself. Even though we moved around all the time, I went to the theater in the town near my grandparents' house a few times with aunts and cousins. I now live in that town and what used to be the balcony has been walled in and they've put up a second screen so they can show two movies at once! That would've been impossible to imagine back in the old days. It's a little claustrophobic up there and the screen is only about half the size of the screen in the main theater, but there's still something appealing about it.
ReplyDeleteI think the 2nd screen would be claustrophobic to me too MM! :)
ReplyDeleteWow... Jujubees! They were really more my dad's favorite than mine. He'd always buy them and I was happy to have ANY candy at all. I remember how impossible they were to get out of those stupid small boxes. Even with small fingers! - And off of my teeth! (Even with small fingers!) They were an annoying candy really!
Sugar Daddys -which someone mentioned above... I was big on those! Loved those! Got them all the time at snack bars during the summer.
