You Bought A What??!

Ok, so we got home safely from Oklahoma after a nice visit with my parents and seeing my father "paroled" from the nursing home and being safely and ecstatically ensconced back at his real home. So, back at our home I asked my oldest how it had gone. He said, "I bought a rifle.". "Why would you do that?" I asked him. "Well," he said, "it's because of what happened Thursday night.". Hmmmmm. "What happened Thursday night?", I questioned him - kind of nervous to hear what he would say. This is what he told me. Thursday night my son and his wife were sound asleep when they were awakened by someone pounding on our front door (it was past midnight). He went upstairs to see what was going on. Izzy was barking like mad. And some guy was indeed pounding on our front door yelling "let me in. This is my house.". Well, duh, it WASN'T his house. He was drunk (sounds like a Marine we crossed paths with many years ago), my son opened the door a crack and told him this wasn't his house. Well, the drunk was sure it WAS his house so felt it was okay to kick the door open. Which he did. And he walked in. My son couldnt get him out, so he called 911. In the meantime, the drunk walked to our kitchen and proceeded to check out the contents of our fridge. Guess we didn't have what he was craving :) The cops came, convinced the guy that this wasn't his house and watched him go on his merry way. More than anything, I think I was more ticked at the cop who didn't even ask the guy for his id, and then watched him for a minute while he walked down the street. He obviously was way drunk, was at least 12 blocks from his home - what would keep this guy from walking up to some other home and kick his way in, thinking it was his? He seemed harmless. But still - what if he wasn't? Anyway, that's what made my son think he needed a rifle :)

  1. Oh wow. That's frightening!
Several years ago, when my oldest was six, she and I were sitting in the living room watching TV and my husband was in our room. Suddenly there was a man at our front door (next to a big double window so he could see us and we could see him) banging on the door saying he needed help and wanting to come inside and use our phone. He was keeping one hand under his sweatshirt, though, and I was terrified that if I opened the door at all he'd force his way in and hurt us, rob us, or whatever. So, I made Emma hide in the hallway (no windows), and called 911. He hung around outside, even after I told him I called the police, so that made me feel slightly better- but I sure was glad when the proper people came.

  2. The cop was so very much in error. What if the guy came back? Like you said, what if he went to some other house. At the least he should have been hauled in and made to sleep it off in the drunk tank. Scary stuff. Glad you are back safe and sound and your father is doing better.

  5. Wow! Where do you live? That cop was so in error. That guy woud not be walking away if he had tried that in this town. He would be taken in for breaking and entering as well as intoxicated in public - and more I am sure. It was NOT safe to allow him to just walk away. Is there a police review board in your community?

  6. Scary! We had someone try to come into our apartment when we were first married. My husband opened the door with his rifle pointed at our visitor....who turned out to be a tipsy neighbor in the next building over who thought she was home. We gave her as big of a fright as she gave us!

  7. WOW very scary thing to happen, and it is sad we live in scarier times. : / So much has changed over the years. I live in a semi-retirement community and 10 yrs ago I left my doors unlocked. Not now. Even when I am at home I keep them locked.

  8. I am thinking a rifle is a bit excessive, clearly NOT opening the door AND calling 911 would be far safer response

  9. Crazy .. Scarey. Thank God they are ok. I often think about that..what if? We would have no way to protect our family.

  11. This is probably not the best time to share with you that we lived in this home for twenty-nine years without a locking mechanism on either the front or the rear door. We figured that we were so remote, that if varmints meant to get in, they wouldn't stop at a locked door. When I replaced the home-made back door with a pre-fabricated steel door, it came with a lock. Guess that means I better install a locking door on the front too. Sigh.

  12. I forgot to mention; I have never owned a weapon, and only fired one in the service, a long time ago.

  13. That's definitely scary and not only did the guy pose a potential danger to others, he could easily have put himself in danger as well. It's completely insane that the cop did not do more.

  14. Glad your dad is home and happy :)

Nothing like coming home to "I bought a rifle!"

I think you should consider a Rescue Panther :)
