So Long Davy
I just heard the sad news - - Davy Jones of the Monkees died of a heart attack. I loved the Monkees. I grew up watching them on TV. I remember once telling my dad, in my innocent, youthful way, "Dad, you've got to watch this show, it is sooooooo funny!!" And to my dad's credit, he sat down and watched it with me. I kept looking over at him to see his expression, knowing that he would just be cracking up at everything that Davy, Mike, Peter and Mickey said. I couldn't understand why he wasn't laughing. It was sooooo funny. I realize today in my adulthood that the Monkees wasn't funny to my dad in the same way that The Simpsons isn't funny to me the way it was to my children. I'm old. Not to mention that the humor of the Simpsons is kind of . . . oh, what's the word? Stupid.

I never understood why my parents didn't think things I knew were funny, until I became a parent myself. It must be some unwritten law that parents and children don't agree on clothes styles, music, humor, or curfews. I loved the Monkees and of course Davy was the cutest. I have some of their songs from iTunes. I like their version better than any of the remakes or remixes.

Every teenager needs a youthful idol. I am so glad we were of the age to have a group like the Monkeys, yes, Davy Jones, to look up to. I don't remember every hearing anything about drugs or abuse or anything like that with them. It is a shame the idols our teenagers look up to cannot be as wholesome.
ReplyDeleteWhen I opened the internet and saw Davy Jones' picture, I almost started crying! For me and my sisters, there wasn't a band better than The Monkeys. And yes, we all have their greatest hits on CD.
